For and during

We use ‘for + a period of time’ to say how long something goes on.

တစ်ခုခုဖြစ်တာဘယ်လောက်ကြာလဲဆိုတာကို ဖော်ပြပြေဆိုဖို့ for + a period of time ကို သုံးရပါတယ်။

for two hours

for a week

for ages

We watched television for two hours last night.

မနေ့ညက (၂) နာရီကြာအောင် ငါတို့ ရုပ်မြင်သံကြား ကြည့်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။

Daw San San is going away for a week in September.

ဒေါ်စန်းစန်းက စက်တင်ဘာလမှာ တပတ်ကြာ ခရီးထွက်နေတာ။

Where have you been? မင်း ဘယ်တွေရောက်နေတာလဲ။

I’ve been waiting for ages. ငါ အကြာကြီး စောင့်နေတာ။

We use ‘during + noun’ to say when something happens.

တစ်ခုခုဘယ်အချိန်မှာဖြစ်တယ်ဆိုတာကို ဖော်ပြပြောဆိုဖို့ during + noun ကို သုံးရပါတယ်။

ရုပ်ရှင်ပြနေစဉ်အတွင်း

 during our holiday

ကျွန်တော်တို့အားလပ်ရက်အတွင်း

during the night

ညအတွင်း

I fell asleep during the film.

ရုပ်ရှင်ပြနေတုန်း ငါ အိပ်ပျော်သွားခဲ့တယ်။

We met some really nice people during our holiday.

အားလပ်ရက်အတွင်း ကျွန်တော်တို့ တကယ့်လူကောင်းတချို့ကို တွေ့ခဲ့တယ်။

The ground is wet. It must have rained during the night.

မြေကြီးက စိုနေတာ၊ ညတုန်းက မိုးရွာခဲ့တာဖြစ်ရမယ်။

With ‘time words’ (for example: the morning/ the afternoon/ the summer), we can usually say ‘in’ or ‘during’.

အချိန်ကိုဖော်ပြတဲ့စကားလုံးများဖြစ်တဲ့ the morning/ the afternoon/ the summer စတဲ့စကားလုံးများနဲ့ဆိုရင် in သို့မဟုတ် during နဲ့သုံးပြီး ဖော်ပြပြောဆိုလို့ရပါတယ်။

It must have rained in the night or during the night.

ညတုန်းက မိုးရွာခဲ့တာဖြစ်ရမယ်။

I’ll phone you sometime during the afternoon.

နေ့လယ်ခင်းတချိန်ချိန်မှာ ငါ မင်းကို ဖုန်းဆက်မယ်။

You cannot use ‘during’ to say how long something goes on.

တစ်ခုခုဟာအချိန်ဘယ်လောက်ကြာအောင်ဖြစ်တယ်ဆိုတာကို ဖော်ပြပြောဆိုဖို့ during ကို မသုံးရပါ။  for ကို သုံးရပါတယ်။

It rained for three days without stopping. (not during three days)

မိုးတွေ ဆက်တိုက်ရွာနေတာ သုံးရက်ရှိပြီ။

‘during’ နဲ့ ‘for’ ကို ဆက်ပြီး နှိုင်းယှဉ်ကြည့်ရအောင်။

I fell asleep during the film. ရုပ်ရှင်ပြနေတုန်း ငါအိပ်ပျော်သွားတယ်။

I was asleep for half an hour. ငါ အိပ်ပျော်သွားတာ နာရီဝက်ကြာတယ်။

တစ်ခုခုဖြစ်နေစဉ်အတွင်းဆိုတာကို ဖော်ပြပြောဆိုဖို့အတွက် during ကို သုံးနိုင်သလို၊ while ကိုလည်း သုံးနိုင်တယ်။

during က သူရဲ့နောက်မှာ Noun/ Noun phrase လိုက်ရပြီးတော့ while က subject + verb လိုက်ရတယ်။

We met a lot of interesting people during the holiday.

အားလပ်ရက်အတွင်းမှာ စိတ်ဝင်စားဖို့ကောင်းတဲ့လူတွေအများကြီးကို ငါတို့ တွေ့ခဲ့ကြတယ်။

We met a lot of interesting people while we were on holiday.

ငါတို့အားလပ်ရက်ရနေတုန်းမှာ စိတ်ဝင်စားစရာကောင်းတဲ့လူတွေအများကြီးကို တွေ့ခဲ့တယ်။

Thura suddenly began to feel ill during the exam.

စာမေးပွဲဖြေနေတုန်းမှာ သူရ ရုတ်တရက် စဖျားလာတယ်။

Thura suddenly began to feel ill while he was doing the exam.

စာမေးပွဲဖြေနေတုန်းမှာ သူရ ရုတ်တရက် စဖျားလာတယ်။

When we are taling about the future, we have to use the present (not will) after ‘while’.

အနာဂတ်ကာလနဲ့ပက်သက်ပြီး ပြောဆိုဖော်ပြတဲ့အခါ while ရဲ့နောက်မှာ present ကို သုံးရတယ်။ will ကို မသုံးရပါ။

I’ll be in Mandalay next week.

နောက်အပတ်ထဲမှာ ငါ မန္တလေးမှာ ရှိလိမ့်မယ်။

I hope to see you while I’m there.

ငါ အဲ့ဒီကိုရောက်ရင် မင်းကို တွေ့ရဖို့ ငါမျှော်လင့်ပါတယ်။

What are you going to do while you are waiting?

မင်းစောင့်နေတုန်းမှာ ဘာလုပ်မှာလဲ။
