Like and As

We can use ‘like’ and ‘as’ to say that things are similar.

တစ်ခုခုဟာဆင်တူတယ်လို့ဖော်ပြပြောဆိုဖို့ ‘like’ နဲ့ ‘as’ ကို သုံးနိုင်ပါတယ်။

Like is a preposition, used before a ‘noun or pronoun’.

like ကတော့ preposition ဖြစ်ပြီးတော့ noun, pronoun တွေရဲ့ရှေ့မှာ သုံးရပါတယ်။

He runs like the wind.

သူဟာလေလိုပဲပြေးနိုင်တယ်၊ အပြေးမြန်တယ်။

She looks like me.

သူ(မ)က ကျွန်တော်နဲ့တူတယ်။

As is a conjunction, used before subject + verb or a prepositional expression.

As ကတော့ conjunction ဖြစ်ပြီးတော့ subject + verb ရဲ့ရှေ့မှာ သုံးရပါတယ်၊ prepositional expression တွေရဲ့ရှေ့မှာလည်း သုံးနိုင်ပါတယ်၊ (as on Monday, as in Mandalay စသဖြင့်)

Nobody knows her as I do.

သူ(မ)ကို ငါ့သိသလို ဘယ်သူမှ မသိကြဘူး။

On Monday, as on Friday, we meet at eight.

တနင်္လာနေ့ကျရင်လည်း သောကြာနေ့ကလိုပဲ (၈) နာရီမှာ ငါတို့တွေ့ကြမယ်။

In Nay Pyi Taw, as in Mandalay, the weather is very hot.

နေပြည်တော်မှာလည်း မန္တလေးမှာလိုပဲ ရာသီဥတုက အတော်ကို ပူတာ။

like နဲ့ ‌as ရဲ့ဥပမာစာကြောင်းလေးတွေ ထပ်ကြည့်ကြစို့။

Being in love is like an illness.

ချစ်ခြင်းဟာ ရောဂါတစ်ခုလိုပါပဲ။

As I said, you’re too late.

ငါပြောခဲ့သလိုပဲ မင်းတအားနောက်ကျတယ်။

(as I said, as you see, as you know, as usual တို့ဟာလည်း အသုံးများကြပါတယ်။)

In informal speech (not in writing), many people use ‘like’ as a conjunction.

informally စကားပြောတဲ့နေရာမှာတော့ ‘like’ ကို ‘conjunction’ အနေနဲ့လည်း သုံးကြပါတယ်။ (အရေးမှာတော့ လုံးဝမသုံးရပါ။)

Nobody loves you like I do.

ဘယ်သူမှ မင်းကို ငါချစ်သလို မချစ်ကြဘူး။

Like I said, she wasn’t there.

ငါပြောသလိုပဲ သူ(မ) အဲ့ဒီမှာ မရှိဘူး။

We use ‘as’ as a preposition before a noun or a pronoun to talk about jobs, roles and functions of people and things.

‘As’ ကို preposition အနေနဲ့ သုံးတဲ့အခါလည်းရှိပါတယ်။ ‘လူတွေရဲ့အလုပ်တွေ၊ ရာထူးနေရာ၊ လုပ်ငန်း၊ အရာဝတ္တုပစ္စည်းမျာရဲ့ လုပ်ငန်းတွေအကြောင်း’ ကို ဖော်ပြပြောဆိုရာမှာ as ကို preposition အဖြစ် noun, pronoun တို့ရဲ့ရှေ့မှာ အသုံးပြုနိုင်ပါတယ်။

He worked as a waiter for a year.

သူဟာ စားပွဲထိုးအဖြစ် (၁)နှစ်ကြာ အလုပ်လုပ်ခဲ့တယ်။

Don’t use your plate as an ashtray.

မင်းရဲ့ပန်းကန်ပြားကို ဆေးလိပ်ပြာခံခွက်အဖြစ် မသုံးနဲ့နော်။

‘as’ ကို preposition အဖြစ်သုံးတာနဲ့  ‘like’ ကို preposition အဖြစ်သုံးတာကို ယှဉ်ကြည့်ရအောင်။

As you brother, I must warn you to be careful.

မင်းရဲ့အစ်ကိုတစ်ယောက်အနေနဲ့ ဂရုစိုက်ဖို့ မင်းကို ငါ သတိပေးရမယ်။ (အစ်ကိုတစ်ယောက်အနေနဲ့)

Like your brother, I must warn you to be careful.

မင်းရဲ့အစ်ကိုလိုပဲ ဂရုစိုက်ဖို့ မင်းကို ငါ သတိပေးရမယ်။ (မင်းရဲ့အစ်ကိုသတိပေးသလို ငါလည်း သတိပေးတယ်။)
