On time vs In time

On time ဆိုတာ punctual အချိန်တိကျတာ၊ not late နောက်မကျတာ ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ It happens at the time which was planned. စီစဉ်ထားတဲ့အချိန်မှာ အတိအကျ ဖြစ်တာ၊ လုပ်တာ ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

The 11.45 train left on time. ၁၁နာရီ၄၅မိနစ်ရထားက အချိန်အတိအကျထွက်တယ်။ (လုံးဝနောက်မကျဘူး၊ ၁၁း၄၅ မှာ ကွက်တိထွက်တာ)

‘I’ll meet you at 7.30.’ ငါမင်းကို ၇နာရီခွဲမှာ တွေ့မယ်နော်။

‘OK, but please be on time.’ ကောင်းပါပြီ၊ ဒါပေမယ့် အချိန်တိကျပေးနော်၊ (နောက်မကျပါနဲ့)

The opposite of ‘on time’ is ‘late’.

on time ရဲ့ ဆန့်ကျင်ဘက်က late ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

In time (for something / to do something) ဆိုတာ soon enough ‘တစ်ခုခုအတွက် သိုမဟုတ် တစ်ခုခုလုပ်ဖို့ အချိန်မီတယ်’ လို့ အဓိပ္ပါယ်ရပါတယ်။

Will you be home in time for dinner?

ညစာစားဖို့ မင်း အချိန်မီ အိမ်ပြန်ရောက်မယ်မလား။

တစ်ခုခုကို ‘အချိန်အတိအကျ’ ဖြစ်တာမျိုးမဟုတ်ပေမယ့် တစ်ခုခုလုပ်ဖို့အတွက် အချိန်မီတယ်လို့ ပြောဖို့အတွက် in time ကို သုံးပါတယ်။

I’m in a hurry.

ငါ အလျင်လိုနေပြီ။

I want to be home in time to see the game on television

 ရုပ်မြင်သံကြားမှာလာမယ့် အားကစားပွဲကိုကြည့်ဖို့  ငါ အိမ်ကို အချိန်မီ ရောက်ချင်တယ်ဟေ့။ (ဘယ်အချိန်မှာ ကွက်တိရောက်ရမယ်လို့ တိကျစရာမလို၊ ကြည့်ဖို့ အချိန်မီရင် ရပြီ)

The opposite of ‘in time’ is ‘too late’.

‘in time’ ရဲ့ဆန့်ကျင်ဘက်က ‘too late’ နောက်ကျလွန်းတာ ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

I got home too late to see the game on television.

ရုပ်မြင်သံကြားမှာလာမယ့် အားကစားပွဲကို မကြည့်လိုက်ရဘူး အိမ်ပြန်နောက်ကျလွန်းလို့။

‘အချိန်မီတယ်ဆိုရုံလေး၊ အချိန်ကပ်ပြီး မီလိုက်တယ်’ လို့ ပြောဆိုရေးသားဖို့ဆိုရင် ‘just in time’ လို့ သုံးနိုင်ပါတယ်။

We got to the station just in time for our train.

တို့စီးမယ့်ရထားကို မီတယ်ဆိုရုံလေး ဘူတာကို ငါတို့ ရောက်ခဲ့တာ။

A child ran into the road in front of the car – I managed to stop just in time.

ကလေးတစ်ယောက် ကားရှေ့ကို ပြေးဝင်လာတာ၊ ငါ အချိန်မီတယ်ဆိုရုံလေးကပ်ပြီး ကားကို ရပ်နိုင်လိုက်တာ။
